I really do not get as much time these days to keep my blog as up to date as I’d like. The photography business is picking up with recent clients including Australian Red Cross, FamilyVoice Australia and The Salvation Army all filling my time. Plus, I’m now have Dan Davies working with me at STORYco helping to develop sales and in particular visiting small business owners offering our photography, film making and web design products. The next Exploring Photography Workshop will be held on Friday 15 & Saturday 16 June 2012 in Sydney. Check out creative photo.com.au for the news there.

Afternoon-tea and photography with knife maker John Hounslow-Robinson

The clean, fresh air and pure running waters rushing off the south-western valleys from Mt. Wellington towards the Huon are a fitting place for John – a man who’s distinctive sparkling blue eyes, and wild mop of grey hair shout – although softly, of a life chasing one party after another. “Almost one too many” John Hounslow-Robinson recounted, as he shared the story of how one day whilst chasing an escaped pig he was struck with excruciating chest pain. He was immediately rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he received a second lease of life, in the form of a quadruple heart bypass.

We spent the afternoon together, sipping tea, chatting, eating abalone caught locally and prepared by his son Tom.

As we walked around the property, John showed me some of the treasures that he had stored up, ready for future knife handles to be made from: Pieces of old timber recycled salvaged from convict-built homes, a piece of Dugong bone, some stag antler a bowling ball. “These make great dishes. Bowls for cutting up herbs. I’ve been working on this one for a couple of years now.”

John has a careful eye for detail, and his highly sought after knives are used by gourmet celebrity chefs, and foodies from all across the world. I asked John if he’s up early every day forging these beautiful Damascus knives. “Oh. Depends. I might spend a morning working on a few.” He shares with me how his enjoyment for the natural environment and living simply allows him to manage a slower pace. I enjoyed the time that John generously spent chatting with me as we shared our passion for photography with each other. John enjoys shooting with his pinhole camera and medium format Bronica. I fired off a few shots as we explored his neighbours home-bar, the “rusty nail”. I look up to the ceiling and spot dozens of rusting nails that have been punched through the floor boards above. “Good job I’m a short pome!” I joke.

I look forward to getting to know John some more, and getting some photography in the forge capturing the process of crafting one of the Damascus knives that he’s so well known for creating.

Stu Harris was engaged to produce a photographic documentary book to tell the story about the partnership between Australians and Congolese to help bring healing to the nation of DR Congo through the work of Goma based hospital HEAL Africa. Learn more about this exciting project.

Storyco. The new name of Stu Harris Photography.

Since establishing Stu Harris Photography in 2008, this business name has become increasingly non-descriptive of the services that have been fulfilled and are offered. Over the past 16 months since leaving Apple, I have been involved in producing motion graphics, corporate videos, documentaries, iPhone apps, software training, websites and of course, photography.

My passion for photography has not wavered, in fact quite the contrary. As I continue to market what I do it is clear where the demand is and as such I need to make it very clear the services that are offered.

In the broad sense the marketing services that I offer are in the following categories: Photography, Video, Web and Apps. More specifically, I prefer to describe myself as a visual story-teller. That could be for commercial businesses, or a family. What type of media is used to communicate the story is not restricted to photography, but it is determined as we discuss the brief and decide upon the most appropriate vehicle for sharing your story.

As I’ve described in my introductory video, Storyco is all about people. We go beyond the corporate veneer to the heart of the business. People. I work with other local talent, web-designers, writers, software developers, voice-over artists, artists, graphic designers and other creatives in virtual teams to scale up or down to meet the smallest or largest of client’s needs.

Celebrating the Golden Years of Marriage

This afternoon couples assembled at Parliament House, Hobart to celebrate the Golden Years of in honour and support of traditional marriage. Twenty-seven “Golden Couples” – those married for 50 years of more - attended the event hosted by FamilyVoice Australia. Certificates were given to all the couples in recognition of their enduring commitment to one another and their valuable contribution to society.

Together the 27 couples represented 1,447 years of married life, and had produced 415 descendants between them!

Politicians, ministers of faith, the media and members of the public joined together to celebrate this event – a first in Tasmania.

Below is a collection of some of the photographs from the event, together with several Golden Couples portraits that we captured.
